It has been said that gossip is saying something behind someone’s back that you would never dare say to the person’s face. My friend Karen says- “her own words have often landed her in a heap of trouble.” She shares from experiences the how’s (and how-not-to’s) of dealing with the tongue in her new book Keep It Shut. Flattery and people-pleasing is just as sinful as gossip and backstabbing.

Have you ever had this experience? A moment when you regretted what came out of your mouth. Our conversation was gossip, casual, unconstrained conversation. Its a wonderful book and you hit the nail on. Im currently reading Keep My Mouth Shut - when to keep it shut, when to say nothing at all. The strange thing about this sin is that it appears to be one that does not get easier as you get older. Not one word spoken brought benefit to anyone who listened. Gossip is a sin that is rampant in the church, yet no one seems to address it or acknowledge it.
#Gossip and keep it shut how to
She has written 18 books including Keep It Shut: What to Say, How to Say It, and When to Say Nothing at All and the 2020 ECPA devotional. Nothing in my conversation had been helpful in building her up. Karen Ehman is a New York Times bestselling author, a Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker and a contributing writer for both Encouragement for Today online devotions and the First 5 Bible study app. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” rushed to my mind as conviction filled my heart. What kind of excuse can I make up for why we were talking about her? A sick feeling stirred in my stomach and panic consumed my body as realized the subject of our chat was very close to where the conversation took place. I felt the repulsion of “girlfriends just talking” after I recalled a conversation a friend and I shared after church. We’re concerned and share those concerns. Then there were the annual sweet gigs to Italy, where she was the only host selected to make the sweet trips (Hmmmm). While presenting her products, her gazing into the studio monitors for extended periods to check herself out was an annoying/hilarious distraction. It’s only sharing – really, it’s harmless. I loved/hated to watch former QVC host Lisa Robertson.

You might say I am “quick to speak, slow to think.” The filter from my brain to my mouth doesn’t always work well. My mouth has always gotten me in trouble.
